Spanish Coffee

The Spanish Latte is a latte with a twist. It’s not just coffee poured over ice, but it also has an accent. The traditional Spanish Latte consists of espresso and steamed milk.

You can easily add some fresh fruit to your Spanish Latte in the summer and make it even healthier, or even put in some chocolate syrup for that extra kick! This recipe was designed to be simple, easy to make, and refreshing on those hot summer days when you want something different from just a regular old cup of Joe!

What is a Spanish Latte?

A Spanish latte can include cinnamon or a shot of espresso in it, but that’s not what makes it “Spanish.” When you order one, you should ask the barista to make your drink extra sweet and creamy (note: I recommend asking for it to be at least half steamed milk).

If they don’t put enough cinnamon on top, ask them again! And if they don’t give you enough foam or leave out some of your steamed milk, ask them again! It’s important to be clear about what exactly makes up this delicious beverage.

Making Spanish Latte at Home

Spanish Coffee

Step 1: Steam the Milk and Whisk

Steam the milk in a stainless steel frothing pitcher. Whisk the milk until foamy. If your foam is too thick, add a little more milk and whisk again. If it’s too thin, add more steam as needed.

Step 2: Add Espresso to a Mug

  • Add 2-3 shots of espresso to a mug, depending on how strong you like your coffee.
  • Pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup of steamed milk over the espresso.

Step 3: Pour Steamed Milk into Espresso and Dust with Cinnamon (If Desired)

Now it’s time to pour the steamed milk into your espresso. Depending on how fancy you want to get, you can do this with a frothing pitcher or just a measuring cup. If you have an espresso machine with a steam wand, that’s ideal—just position the tip of your frothing pitcher over the opening of the steam wand, then press down firmly on it while slowly pouring in hot water. This will create lots of foam and make your latte look really cool!

If you’re using a measuring cup instead, carefully fill it with hot water until it reaches 1/3 cup (the amount required for one serving). Then add more hot water until it fills up halfway more than full (you’ll want room for all that delicious foam).

How to Make Iced Spanish Latte

A warm latte may be just the thing for a cold day, but if you go to cafes often and need something to sip on during the hot months of summer, try this recipe!

To make an iced Spanish latte:

  • Add ice to a glass
  • Add espresso and milk until the glass is full
  • Sprinkle cinnamon on top, stir with a straw, and serve!

It is as simple as that. And while we’re on the subject, it’s worth mentioning that you should not pour hot coffee into a very cold glass because this can make it shatter.
