Have you ever tried adding ginger to your coffee? Adding ginger to our coffee might be new to your palate, but putting ginger in your coffee is like adding cinnamon into it where it gives a different kick of pleasantly spicy caffeinated drink.

Ginger is a traditional drink in the Middle East, particularly in Yemen, a country at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula, in Western Asia, they call the drink “Qishr.”

Qishr is a favorite drink among Yemenis’ where it is often served in every household for guest, and it is served when socializing with friends and family. The traditional Yemeni ginger drink is consist of coffee bean shell or the husk, rather than the coffee beans because the husk tastes lighter like tea flavor with less caffeine than coffee.

Today, many were making this drink creating their different input in the coffee. Instead of using the traditional coffee husk today people are using finely ground coffee beans. In the Western country, Qishr is known as ginger coffee or spiced ginger coffee.

So for today’s weekend coffee treat, we will be making a ginger spice coffee with only four ingredients.

Ginger Coffee Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water
  • 6 teaspoons coffee (extra fine grind)
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger

How to Make It

  1. You can make this in a traditional Ibrik if you have one, but if none you can use a small saucepan to combine all the ingredients.
  2. Next is bring the ingredients into a boil and remove from heat.
  3. Let the heat evaporate and once the coffee stops bubbling put it back onto the heat, and allow to come to boil once more.
  4. Remove from heat and repeat step three once more.
  5. After the last boiling process, you can now serve and enjoy.

Note:

  • You can either enjoy your ginger coffee sweet or add milk of your choice to it.
  • Before serving the ginger coffee, allow first to sit in the cups for at least a minute for the grinds fall in the bottom.
  • If you feel that the ginger taste a little bit strong, you can add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or a cardamom pod during cooking.
