Gibraltar coffee

Gibraltar, also known as a cortado, is a drink you can make by mixing equal parts espresso and steamed milk. The word Cortado comes from Spanish, meaning “cut,”—indicating that the espresso is cut with the milk.

A Gibraltar is always served in a Gibraltar glass. It has a tapered bottom and can hold approximately 4.5 ounces of liquid.

Origins of the Name Gibraltar Coffee

The Gibraltar name originated in San Francisco at the Blue Bottle Coffee Company and quickly spread to other coffee shops. While some people claim there are several differences between Cortados and Gibraltars, there are only two.

The Difference Between Gibraltar and Cortado

One difference between these two drinks is the glass they are served in. Gibraltar is typically served in a rock glass with an octagonal bottom, while Cortado is often served in a tapered and smooth carajillo shot glass. Moreover, the Gibraltar glass tumbler is sometimes slightly longer.

Additionally, in Cortado, the milk-to-espresso ratio is 1:1. In Gibraltar, there’s a double shot of espresso and only 1 to 2 fluid ounces of steamed milk.

If you have a Gibraltar made with two shots of espresso and 2 ounces of steamed milk, then yes, you do have a Cortado! However, more often than not, you’ll have your Gibraltar made with less milk, and therefore it’s stronger.

Making Gibraltar Coffee

If you’re looking for a Gibraltar (or Cortado) with less milk, you can order one at your local coffee shop or try making it at home. It’s an ideal coffee drink because it has less milk than a latte, and I like the smooth balance of espresso and milk.

To make a Gibraltar, first, make a double shot of espresso. Next, steam or froth ¼ cup of whole milk. Gently pour the espresso into the glass, then top with the milk.
