The holiday season is everyone’s favorite. It is the time associated with lots of Christmas foods, family time, big gatherings, enjoying meals, and looking out to bright, colorful lights lining all the houses around the block. The holiday season is all about spending the much-needed time together for my little daughter, husband, and me.
We catch up on stories, playtime, and baking delicious Christmas cookies. Speaking of cooking, we try several Christmas recipes to mark the holidays special. A visit to the supermarket in search of Christmas goods, including little muffins and cupcake liners decorated with a Christmas theme. Buying gifts last minute is another holiday activity that we thoroughly enjoy together.
So, this year, I searched for some most popular Christmas foods to try with my little girl. The list was undoubtedly long, but here are some of our favorites:
Most Popular Christmas Foods
1. Roast Potatoes
Nothing beats the aroma of classic crispy golden roast potatoes. This side dish is one of the most popular foods consumed on Christmas as it is so easy to make. Its prep time is about 5 minutes, and its baking time is 40 minutes.
Take about 4 pounds of King Edward potatoes, slice them into large equal pieces and boil for 5 minutes. Prepare the oven and preheat it to about 390 degrees Fahrenheit and then throw in a large roasting pan drizzled with olive oil to heat in the oven.
Once the oil is hot enough, carefully arrange the potato pieces on the tray in one layer and let them bake for 40 minutes. And remember to flip the potato pieces halfway through. Drain the oil once potatoes are done and season with salt!
2. Sugar Cookies
It is not Christmas until you bake sugar cookies with cute little cut-out shapes. These cookies are the best, and they leave your kitchen with such a homely and cozy aroma. They are also very easy to put together.
Take flour, salt, and baking powder in one large bowl and mix while you beat butter, vanilla, and sugar till they are light and fluffy in another bowl.
Mix the dry ingredients into the wet one and mix till fully blended. Half the dough into two portions and roll them out with wax sheets covering them. Chill in the refrigerator for half an hour to set completely and then cut out with cookie cutters.
Prep the oven, preheat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and place cookies on the baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, and you are done!
3. Turkey
Turkey is not just for Thanksgiving dinner; it is equally popular on Christmas day. Whether you get a frozen turkey from the market or have it fresh from the store a day before cooking, this guide on cooking an impressive turkey to leave your guests stunned is everything you will need this Christmas.
4. Gravy
Of course, the holiday season is all about elevating every experience, taste, and memorable event. It is why a hearty Christmas meal is incomplete without gravy. Whether you want only to drizzle it or bathe your dinner in this delectable side dish, gravy is a must for the Christmas table.
The easiest way to whip up gravy is to collect the roasted meat juices and strain them separately. Make the juices up to 500 ml by adding water and boiling up. Dissolve a cube of stock, cornflour mixed in water, and bring the whole thing to a boil.
Keep stirring after adding the cornflour and leave to simmer for about 2 minutes, and you are done!
5. Sage and Onion Stuffing
This sage and onion stuffing recipe is a hit in our house. Feel free to replace some ingredients with your favorites and put a personal twist to them.
Heat a tad bit of butter and oil in a pan and soften the onions. Put some breadcrumbs in the pan along with sage and season with salt and pepper. You can either press the prepared mixture into a baking tray or roll it into small balls and put it on a greased baking tray.
Cook for about 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes. Take it out once the upper crust turns crispy and golden. It is best served with turkey or chicken.
6. Pigs in a Blanket
If you have never wanted to stop after eating one, then you must be a fan of pigs in a blanket. One can never have enough of these bacon-wrapped sausages that are bursting with flavor. The recipe is as simple and as easy as it can get. You only need two items: sausages, streaky bacon strips, and a preheated oven at about 350F.
Roll long strips of bacon around the sausages and tightly wrap with cocktail sticks. Bake the bacon-wrapped sausages for about fifteen minutes and serve hot!
Ho Ho Ho! It is Christmas After All!
The spirit of Christmas is so contagious that you start feeling festive just by watching a show of lights by the road. I cannot think of anything more homely than my kitchen filled with the warmth and aroma of baked or cooked Christmas foods. These are only some of the top famous Christmas foods I love. I will share tons of other recipes after trying them out. Till then, happy holiday season, everyone.
